A Combination of two trails that makes an 18 mile round trip mostly along the shoreline of Smithville Lake. It also passes through wooded areas and through several campgrounds. The Anita Gorman Trailhead allows access without paying the County Park Daily Use Fee, for bikers and walkers. The trailhead is on Collins Road, just on the south end of the bridge over the lake, with a large parking area.
Directions: From the East side of town cross the river on I-435 North to I-35 N to US-291 on the north side of Liberty. Turn Northeast on 291 a couple of miles to Stark Road (there is a stop light.) Turn North on Stark crossing Missouri 92 where Stark changes to County Hwy E. Stay North on Hwy E (it will turn to the west in a couple of miles) until you come to an intersection with Collins Road. The signage at that intersection will say go straight to Crows Creek (don’t) or turn right to Camp Branch Marina. Turn Right on Collins. The trail head will be about two miles, on the left, just before you cross the bridge over the lake.
From the center of town: Cross the river on I- 35 North, Stay on I-35 until US 291 then follow the above directions.
From the West Side: Take I 435 North to State Highway 152, go East on 152 to US 169, turn North on 169 to State Hwy 92. Go East on State 92 to County Hwy E, turn left (North) on E, which will curve to the west. Follow the directions above to the trailhead.
To carpool or Caravan: Cross the river north on I-35 North from downtown, stay north on I-35 to State Hwy 152/Liberty Exit. Turn Left (West) on 152 and go about 3 stoplights to Flintlock. Turn North on Flintlock and enter the Target (9220 NE Barry Rd/Hwy 152 and Flintlock, KCMO) parking lot on the right. Meet on the West side of the building at 9:00 and carpool, then follow Tina and I to the trailhead, leaving Target at 9:15.
It really isn’t all that hard to get there, just sounds like it.
